Final Project Report – WP Credits Program
Introduction
My name is Pedro Centeno López, and this is my final report for the WP Credits program. Throughout this project, I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team by translating strings into Spanish (Costa Rica – es_CR) using the official Translate.WordPress.org platform.
The purpose of this report is to summarize my contribution, the learning process, the challenges I encountered, and the knowledge I gained while participating in the WordPress open-source community.
Teams and Projects I Contributed To
During the WP Credits program, I contributed to the WordPress Polyglots Team, whose goal is to make WordPress and its ecosystem accessible to users around the world through localization and translation.
My contribution focused on translating strings for the plugin RY WooCommerce City Select into Spanish (Costa Rica). Throughout the project, I submitted 100 translation suggestions using the official translation platform.
Learning Resources
Before starting my contribution, I explored the official WordPress resources to better understand the Polyglots workflow and the translation process.
The main resources I used were:
- Translate.WordPress.org
- WordPress Polyglots Handbook
- WordPress.org Profile
- Guidance provided by the WP Credits course documentation
These resources helped me understand how translation projects are organized, how suggestions are submitted, and how community editors review contributions.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the first challenges I encountered was understanding how the translation platform works. Since this was my first contribution to an open-source project, I needed to become familiar with the interface, the translation workflow, and the submission process.
Another challenge involved translating strings that contained proper names and geographical locations. At first, I assumed every string should be translated. However, after researching the context of these entries, I learned that many proper names should remain unchanged because they represent official place names.
Finally, I learned that submitted translations are not published immediately. Instead, they enter a review process where editors verify the quality and consistency of each suggestion before approving it.
My Contributions
Throughout this project, I completed the following contributions:
- Submitted 100 translation suggestions to the RY WooCommerce City Select plugin.
- Explored and learned the Translate.WordPress.org workflow.
- Documented every stage of my contribution through a personal WordPress blog.
- Shared my contribution with the Polyglots community by requesting a review through the official communication channel.

Key Learnings from the WP Credits Program
Participating in WP Credits taught me that contributing to WordPress involves much more than writing code. Every contribution, including translations, helps improve the experience of users around the world.
I also learned the importance of understanding the context before translating a string. Good localization requires consistency, attention to detail, and respect for official terminology.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson was discovering how a global open-source community collaborates to continuously improve WordPress through volunteer contributions.

Personal Reflections and Next Steps
The WP Credits program has been an enriching experience that allowed me to make my first contribution to WordPress.
One aspect I particularly enjoyed was learning how the Polyglots Team collaborates to make WordPress available in many different languages. It was interesting to discover that even small contributions, such as translating interface strings, can positively impact thousands of users.
In the future, I would like to continue contributing to WordPress by participating in additional translation projects and exploring other contributor teams such as Documentation or Support.
This experience has also strengthened my interest in participating in open-source communities and continuing to improve my technical and collaborative skills.
Another challenge involved translating strings that contained proper names and geographical locations. At first, I assumed every string should be translated. However, after researching the context of these entries, I learned that many proper names should remain unchanged because they represent official place names.

Conclusion
The WP Credits program has provided me with valuable technical knowledge and practical experience contributing to one of the largest open-source communities in the world.
Completing this project allowed me to understand the contribution process, improve my translation skills, and experience firsthand how collaborative software development works. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this program and look forward to continuing my journey as a WordPress contributor.
